There is no shortage of burgers in Chicago. There is also no shortage of delicious burgers in Chicago and yet, it came as no surprise last year when Bon Appetit called Au Cheval‘s the best burger in Chicago.

There’s only one problem. When it comes to burgers in the Brendan Sodikoff family, Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf, also home to the best elotes and old fashioneds, gives its sister restaurant a run for its money.

For a restaurant with “boeuf” in the title, you might feel like it’s a cop out to order a burger over a dry-aged ribeye or a petite duchess-cut filet mignon topped with herbed butter or Roquefort, served with a rich tarragon-flecked bearnaise sauce, but don’t second guess yourself on this one.

Bavette’s griddled burger, priced at $9.95, is topped with sharp American cheese and dijonaise sauce. The thick, 8-ounce beef patty perfectly seasoned, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The only thing that will make your burger experience better is an order of pommes frites, served with an aioil that you’ll dream about.

The ambience at Bavette’s is that of a chic, European-style steakhouse, but you can pay homage to the ornate chandeliers, leather booths and exposed brick walls with retro cocktails (think: mint julep, French 75 cocktail and cognac sazerac). Cap your night off with a slice of chocolate cream pie or whiskey ice cream.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be at the gym.

Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf, 218 West Kinzie Street. For more information call 312-624-8154 or visit online.
